Lowepro Flipside 400 August 14, 2010 H Excellent high quality product - very pleased with it. Seller also recommendedfor their prompt delivery. Thanks.
A great camera bag for photowalks July 25, 2010 Farouq Taj (London UK) Features I found particularly useful:
- There are clips on the top of the bag that I use to secure a light jacket. I tend to start a photowalk wearing a light jacket then feel too warm and then struggle carrying it after I've taken it off later.
- The ability to release one arm from the strap and swing the bag round to the front to gain access to the camera kit. I don't need to place the bag on the, sometimes muddy, ground
- All weather cover that can be taken out to cover the whole bag when it starts raining
The only criticism I have is the tripod holder. I expect most people who buy such a bag will have a professional grade tripod. Mine is quite heavy and I'm fairly certain the weight of the tripod pulling against the fabric of the bag will damage it. The method of securing the tripod to the bag is only suitable for very light/small tripods.
Overall I recommend this bag for anyone with a DSLR camera who does lots of photowalks.
Nice, but not as ergonomic as the Flipside 300 July 9, 2010 Artak Hambarian 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nice, but not as ergonomic as the Flipside 300 - I have both, but this one does need your knee when you flip it to your front to access the gear. Instead its side pockets can hold a tripod, e.g. the Gitzo GT1541T. The reason of this discomfort is in the fact that the hip belt is connected to the flap (door) instead of the body of the backpack. I bought this one for larger size. If fixed, this may become the best of all that I have had including TT.
Great purchase! June 28, 2010 Ms. K. A. Sharman (UK) I am only an amateur photographer but this bag is very sturdy giving me the confidence that all items within it are fully protected, particularly when travelling. There is plenty of space for what I need it for, enabling me to get one SLR body, two lenses, camcorder, point, shoot camera and my netbook, plus all the cables and battery charging packs. The front pocket is brilliant for all those bits and bobs (hard drives, personal possessions) and is actually bigger than it looks. The waterproof cover is an added bonus and works well.
Extremely versatile and convenient bag June 24, 2010 Luc De Jaeger (Belgium) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For years, I've been using the Lowepro Slingshot AW200 and was very pleased with it. However, after lots of trips, my standards were raised and I found out I needed a backpack or rucksack that met the following standards:
- fully waterproof (and that's more than water resistant!) without any additional rain cover. I thought that when totally waterproof rain coats can be manufactured (with goretex or texapore or whatever textiles), why not using this in a bag or rucksack?
- getting to the camera and material fast and easily without putting the bag down (kind of blending a rucksack/backpack with a slingshot)
- the possibility to add additional pouches or gear you can reach instantly from the outside (with D rings or straps etc...)
- a mesh or feature to attach a water bottle (if possible 1 liter bottles or more)
- very comfortable, secure AND durable materials
- room for two DSLR's with a zoom lens attached and extra gear (flashlight, batteries, memory cards, etc.)
- attachments for a tripod and for a raincoat or helmet to fix on the bag/rucksack
After a long search, I discovered the Lowepro Flipside AW400. It seemed to be the only bag that met most of my standards and criteria. It just misses the fully waterproof materials because you still need the rain cover to protect your bag and gear from heavy rain. It also scores quite low when it comes to the attachment of the tripod. Indeed, the tripod holder will only hold a very small tripod/monopod.
BUT, it was the only bag I encountered that had a mesh for a bottle, additional straps for a rain coat on top of the bag, quite some space and room (though it was not easy to get both my DSLR's with lenses attached in the bag). The bag might have been something larger imho so that the gear might fit more comfortably. Because I knew Lowepro's quality standards, I did not hesitate to buy this bag.
I'm extremely satisfied with it so far. With the additional pouches I purchased, I was able to make more room for my DSLR's in the main compartiment of the bag. Though it cannot meet the comfort of a Kata bag (that I also have, but it's a larger one), this Flipside AW400 is the most convenient bag for a day's hike. It's really tops. The straps on the shoulders could be more comfortable though (and thicker) but it's just a very minor issue. It's still the only bag for now that i will recommend to anyone because it's so versatile, comfortable, convenient, sturdy and not too expensive.
